Sybil normally loved sleep. It was the most blissful thing on this planet to her. Well, the whole point of sleep was to recharge, essentially, so it made quite a bit of sense as to why it was just so amazing. Honestly, she'll never understand why some kids put up such a fuss about sleeping... Especially now, when she's finally realized how valuable a soft bed in a cool secluded room, with a warm blanket, really was. This place was swiftly becoming more depressing by the minute.
It looked like one of the nastier locations from Silent Hill, felt like an oven to her, and probably smelled putrid. The mask had the helpful effect of blocking that out. She'd prefer a deceptively nice place compared to a depressing place all around. Like a resort island, or an amusement park.
That was partly the reason as to why she had arrived at the office. With the bodies gone, this place could potentially serve as a nice getaway from the rest of this god forsaken factory. It was irrelevant enough that she doubted much of anyone would come by to visit, especially after the disturbing display there not long ago. After she had stepped in, however, she started to second guess that coming here was a good idea.
Out the window, Sybil couldn't see birds chirping, or trees swaying in the wind. What she did see was a moat of acid that could dissolve a human body, under a dark sky. Like.. unnaturally dark. This little area seemed to be rather polluted. Guess this factory didn't go green; quite the opposite. What, did some greedy, slime ball politician run this place, or... Well naturally whoever set up this game wouldn't really care about preserving earth's beauty.
Sitting down, she let out a deep sigh. Someone who could set up a game where teenagers are forced to kill each other? Who could do that, from a moral perspective?
"...W-Where going to die.. Soon if someone doesn't end up killing." The prospect was utterly horrifying. The calligrapher had to imagine that nobody was feeling very good, having a death countdown held over their heads. Her hands started to shake. This was bad. Jesus, this was so, so bad. Was there really no other way they could survive longer, without someone dying? Was there nothing?
Sybil was on the verge of panic. More so than on the bridge. She couldn't run away to her memories right there. Just as her breathing started to quicken a bit too much... She clenched her fist, making the glove fabric creek, before slamming it into her ribs with as much force as she could muster. Gasping, she felt herself start to calm.
"Get it t-together.." She muttered to herself.

Ryuu Sasaki | Ryuu was specifically searching for F9. She was an interesting person. Someone who this first motive didn't really affect, at leas the timeline. Perhaps she would be so kind to lend him her gasmask while everyone died. Perhaps not. Probably not. He couldn't see her face, he couldn't read her expression. He couldn't determine her strengths or weaknesses. He couldn't determine whether she was an expendable or not.
He saw her enter the factory chief's office and Ryuu slowly followed, leaning against the nearby wall to listen in on what she was doing, saying, seeing if she was doing something suspicious. Perhaps she would meet with the bears to discuss her game. Or perhaps she wasn't the mastermind. Ryuu was so curious about her and he didn't know anything yet.
"So why don't you kill someone?" Ryuu asked walking in, holding his arms out, "It'd be easy to kill me right now. No one would see and you'd save them all. Then again, you're not affected by the threat of toxic death, now are you?"
| Sybil Conium | Seemingly quite frightened, the girl turned abruptly, the chair she had been standing behind starting to spin as her hip knocked against it. Standing near the entrance to the office was a boy, with brown hair and glasses. Who was he again? ...Ryuu? While the name was a bit hard for her to recall, Sybil certainly knew his talent. On their first day, she mused on the idea that to be the Ultimate Strategist, you wouldn't have much room for empathy.
Seemed now was the time to put that theory to the test. Or was it? Something told Sybil he wasn't here for a friendly chat, especially seeing the line he decided to open with. What was his goal? Just to probe her? The girl held her hands down, squeezing her left wrist nervously.
"I... didn't say I wanted anyone to die, j-just..." Her muffled voice trailed off. Honestly, as much as the word artist wanted them to escape this motive without bloodshed, she highly doubted that was possible. Even still, she wondered if it was the lesser evil to let everyone die together instead of betraying one.
Her mind then set on his... subtle accusation regarding her supposed safety. That gave her a pause. She opened her mouth to protest, but shut it again. Looking down, she touched her mask cheek with a single finger, thinking.
"...I highly doubt my mask is going to save me. I imagine using gas to kill everyone is just a.. uh, just for efficiency. Then all they'd have to do is stab me." Still. Why not blow up the factory? Or turn up the heat to a lethal level? She.. needed it, but this mask was going to get her killed, in all likelyhood. She stuck out more than a robot as it was.
"..B-Besides, most effective chemical gas can't be defended from with a mask. Some can get through the clothes and skin. Like Mustard Gas..." a pregnant silence passed. "I read a lot.. k-know a lot of trivia."
...She paused, completely silent.
| Ryuu Sasaki | Efficiency was probably right, though Ryuu could think of more efficient ways to kill people. They didn't know if the toxic gas would be one that F9 could survive thanks to her mask.
Ryuu dropped his arms and chuckled sarcastically shaking his head. It was an interesting fact that she knew about gasses that wouldn't kill her. It was a fact that would lead anyone to thinking she could be the one behind it all.
"Well then, you wouldn't mind if I took your mask would you? After all, why would you be the most important person here? It could be used to save someone far better than you. Or... perhaps are you the Mastermind? I mean, if I didn't want to die from toxic gases, I'd give myself an excuse to have a gas mask and wear it and blend in with everyone else. Otherwise, why do you have the mask?"
| Sybil Conium | Bingo. Goal. Birdie. There it was... ugh, she should have expected this. Some, no wait... a lot of people could be real bastards when they faced a conflict with others. How often would they put themselves ahead of others? Was that a sign of misanthropy?
She, of course, was fairly sure that Ryuu was implying he was the most important person here. And... was he basically saying if she didn't give him her mask, that meant she was the mastermind? What kind of witch trial absurdity is that?
But.. despite all these thoughts running through Sybil's head, she was pretty much struck silent. Her eyes were locked to the floor. Her arms, crossed tightly. Ryuu's words, they were digging at her...
"You... can't put a value on human life like that." She muttered. Despite her general fondness of being away from people, and her untrusting attitude, she considered everyone equal. "Besides, i-if I gave this mask to anyone, by the small chance that it'd save them, well.. you're not helping yourself right now."
| Ryuu Sasaki | Ryuu shook his head. He wasn't the most important person here. He knew that. However, he was the one who had to make the determination who would survive if anyone did. He had to separate himself from everything else. He had to figure out who the mastermind was, and get as many out as possible. If that meant one person because he couldn't figure it out, he had to figure out who needed to get out. He was probably going to die here. He knew he was going to die here. But he had to choose the most logical people to live here.
"Yes you can. In a situation like this, you have to. Don't you understand? You can't save everyone. There will be losses. Someone has to make those choices. That's what I do. I weigh everything, creativity, intelligence, kindness, outlook, possibility of changing the world out there."
"I don't know who you really are. I can't see your face. I can't trust you. We can't have true eye contact. You hold the secret to possibly getting a person out. Is it really fair that you get to get out when others can't? What makes you more valuable than anyone else?"
| Sybil Conium | The sound of a rather exasperated breath could be heard from behind the mask. As the strategist spoke on and on, she took a couple steps forward, slightly letting the desk support her weight as she pressed her hand against it. Ryuu just continued talking, without faltering, and the girl mused to herself.
His voice was getting awfully grating.
"...You're wrong. The most value you can put on a person is j-just.. subjective. About personal feelings. No factual measure on how much one person deserves to live over another." Did she... believe that? She certainly wanted to, but there were some pretty bad people out there... Like the mastermind?
Seemed Ryuu wasn't done either. As she stepped up to him, the boy continued, mentioning how he really had no reason to trust her, and asking her why she thought she was... better? That... Sybil had done well keeping her cool up to that point. She hated being confrontational in these kinds of situations... but with her fist clenching to the sound of leather crunching, she waited for him to finish...
Before sending as much strength into a punch, aimed right at his cheek.
| Ryuu Sasaki | Ryuu's face was jerked to the side as her fist connected with his cheek. The sting was definitely different than he normally felt. He was rarely in the field. After all his brain was what they wanted, not his body. His strategy was important as he could tell those brawny stupid people what to do. Ryuu rubbed his cheek slightly, not moving his head from the side for several moments.
Feeling a warm liquid building up in his mouth, he stuck a finger in and it came out with a slight stain of pink. His teeth felt a bit looser, but none of them were going to fall out. His mouth just didn't enjoy the hit. Pulling out a kerchief he wiped of his finger and then looked back to Sybil.
"Did that make you feel better?"
He didn't sound snooty or sarcastic, it felt genuine. And he actually meant it. If she needed to hate him, he was used to it. If she wanted to punch someone, then he wanted her to punch him. If she needed to kill someone... he wanted her to kill him. The chances are, she'd kill a non-expendable, and Ryuu would want to die in their place because.... while he was smart and he would get them out, he had everything set up already to save the expendables if everything went to plan. Therefore, he was an expendable himself.
"No one is going to kill you. I'll make sure of that."
She'd just proven herself a non-expendable after all.
| Sybil Conium | "Did that make you feel better?"
Suddenly her impression of the strategist shifted slightly. Instead of seeing him as some cold, calculating survivalist who only cared for himself, that softer, almost caring voice said something else. Her eyes widened in surprise, which had gone even further when she noticed blood on her fingers. Looking down at her fist, she loosened her muscles. A single thought sparked in her brain. 'Did I do that?'
"..Sorry. I just got... c-carried away." Anyone would, right? Even the meekest of the meek would get a little ticked with Ryuu after his words. Maybe that was his goal, though. Stepping back, she crossed her arms, listening to him. Did he really want to protect her? Everyone? If the boy was going to try to take leader role, there was likely an expiration date over his head. "That may be hard to prevent. The mastermind is making us go all... All in." Stop it Sybil, this wasn't the time to lose hope. No one's died yet. Except.. Well, that was an ironic thought to take place in this office.
...Could they save anyone? Could she save anyone? With heavy breathing, she looked back to him.
"Thank you though.. I k-know it's not easy to trust me... Everything you said is true." Her face is hidden from the others. No one could really read her. In the group, she was practically an outsider. No one else hid behind a mask. But... "It's just... I c-can't take it off around you all. What's under it, I-it's.." She started to shake a little, before squeezing her arm again. Calm down, Sybil. Calm down...
"..If it'd save anyone on that day, I'll try. B-But for now, I... I can't bear anyone to see... t-them.."
| Ryuu Sasaki | Ryuu wasn't an unlikable guy just because he could be one. It served a purpose. It was the way he earned his talent. Otherwise he would constantly feel guilty over sending people to their deaths and choosing a person over another person would kill him and sometimes he wouldn't be able to choose in time and sometimes he would make a rash decision that would blow the entire maneuver and fuck up the entire strategy. He couldn't let himself be guilty while it was going on.
That didn't stop him from not getting enough sleep because those feelings would come up and he tried so hard to suppress them when he was alone. It just... didn't work as well as when he had to keep up an appearance around others.
"I see..." So that's what he wanted to know. There was something on her face she didn't want people to see. It could be something as stupid as freckles or it could be as bad as burns that covered her entire face. "If that day comes, give your mask to the person I instruct to do so."
Just to hit in his point, he added. "That person won't be me. I plan to die here in this factory."
| Sybil Conium | Slow... Take it slow. That's what she kept internally telling herself. Or maybe not so internal. She may have been quietly muttering that under her breath for a moment or two, but.. hearing Ryuu say "I see" did help her calm herself.
It seemed as though he understood, as much as he could, and wouldn't force her to show them. Relieving. Just about as relieving as the mask itself. Turning, she looked at him, before leaning back, letting it support her weight. It was curious. She certainly didn't care a mask on her person when she arrived at Hope's Peak... It was driving her up a wall trying to piece everything together.
Ryuu spoke again, though she almost tuned it out.
"Huh? Th-then who, if not you? Do you know yet?" She had to imagine he was meeting with others, trying to find the most valuable assets in the group. It was possible the question of who would get her mask is still up in the air.
"H-Hey... Ryuu." Sybil's gaze shifted downwards, grimly. "I'll be honest.. I think someone will die soon. And in that case.. if we can just cooperate with everyone else, c-couldn't we prevent more bloodshed?"
| Ryuu Sasaki | Admitting he didn't know something was a weakness to him. However, showing a weakness was a strategy to make people think him more human and therefore trust him. After all, he couldn't be emotional all the time and he had to make decisions no one else would be willing to. People would die, and if they were getting out, he picked the most amount of people who were the most talented.
"I don't know... yet. But I will. Can I trust you to give your mask to the one I determine?"
After all, she had to trust him in order for him to be able to trust her. While he wasn't one for trusting as people would let him down, he had plans for either way. After all, he would probably force the mask away from her onto the person he deemed.
"No. In this situation people will die. No matter what happens, someone will die. My calculations tell me that the most amount of people who will get out of this alive... is seven."
| Sybil Conium | A pregnant silence filled the room for a moment after he asked that question. Could he trust her? Really, could Sybil be trusted to give the mask to the person that the Ultimate Strategist himself deemed most important to survive? Even she had to ponder that. Really, if it could save anyone, she'd probably give it to whoever she cared for the most. Out of all their lives, if she could just save one..
Breathing out of her nose, she looked away, nodding lightly. One couldn't blame him if Ryuu didn't believe her. The heavily clothed girl walked over to the window, slowly. The landscape was rather gross, at least to her. The girl sighed when Ryuu began speaking again.
"You don't have to act like a computer, you know. C-Could just be up front.. Honestly, I didn't expect any higher though, deep down." Her eyes grew sad. Walking back towards the other end of the office again, she paused, looking to him.
"...I can't imagine what the world is like from your perspective, you know. Where life and death just seems so..." She cut her own words short.
| Ryuu Sasaki | Ryuu looked away for a moment taking in a deep breath before looking to Sybil again. "No I can't." After all it was just his job.
"Do you understand what I'm supposed to do? I can't let my own personal likes get in front of my logic else more people die. Everyone has someone who cares for them, and if I let them die because of an emotional reason when they could've been that one more person who lived if I did things logically... I can't let my emotions get ahead of me. I must go about this logically or I will fail."
Ryuu glared at her for a moment, wondering if she really thought so lowly of him. "Life and death aren't what you think they are to me. The most people should get out, the people who will make the most impact on the world, the people who will change the world for the better. What I do is strive to get the best people out of an impossible situation. Just because I don't let anyone see it... doesn't mean sending a father of five to his death over the twenty year old who had his whole life ahead of him and better skills, doesn't affect me."
| Sybil Conium | Even if he came off as rather cold and calculated, she did wonder if he really was that way, or if he just suppressed his emotions. After all, that concept he gave her didn't sound easy. In fact, if she was forced to make that choice in his place, she'd probably make no choice at all. Sybil doubted she could bare it.
"Sorry... If I came off as rude th-there. You just got me.. Wondering is all. What it's like to... Well, live a life like yours, I guess." Calligraphy. To think, she was sometimes jealous of the other Ultimates that attended that school through the years. Truly talented people. Composers and musicians included. Now, she wasn't so sure her talent was bad. It was a peaceful one. Being an Ultimate Strategist.. That sounded like a curse.
"..I'm going to turn in for the night I suppose. It was..." She paused. What was this, after all? After a moment, she spoke, with a slightly more sure tone, looking into his eyes directly. As if she was trying to make a good impression with her goodbye. "Interesting meeting you. Stay safe, okay?"
Pocketing her left hand, she opened the door and walked out onto the bridge. Fairly relieved. That whole meeting wasn't so terrible, she believed.
